Oskar Reinhart Collection 'Am Römerholz'

Hidden treasures of the Collection

We are spotlighting, for a brief period only, individual, seldom shown works of art from the Collection.

Tournai, Wild Woman and Wild Man bearing a Coat of Arms, last quarter 15th century

This artistically worked wall hanging from one of the leading workshops of its day shows a magnificent coat of arms with intricate decorations. It was once part of a larger ensemble presumably produced to mark the occasion of a marriage. Even though the mystery of the coat of arms' provenance has yet to be solved we can assume that its owner came from a family of knights. Instead of using the usual heraldic beasts the coat of arms is carried by a wild couple. Barefoot and swathed in furs from head to foot these mythical natural creatures stand for a strong, liberated existence driven by instincts and far removed from the usual conventions.
