Symposium 2012

Art without History?
7 and 8 September 2012

In 2012 the Oskar Reinhart Collection ʻAm Römerholz̕  was shown its holdings in a new arrangement. The revised presentation was accompanied from 10 June to 30 September by a display in the prints and drawings galleries documenting Reinhart's life and work. A special programme of events addressed various aspects of Reinhart's collecting and the cultural life of which he was part.

In 2015, the fiftieth anniversary of Oskar Reinhart's death, the museum planed to celebrate his achievement in detail. In preparation for this undertaking we had joined forces with the Centre Allemand d'Histoire de l'Art in Paris to organise a symposium on the subject of art collecting. Participants examined in depth the international context that promoted the development and realisation of Reinhart's ambitious project. Though his collecting philosophy was determined to a large extent by his own ideas and opinions, it also reflected attitudes widespread at an international level from the late nineteenth century to the 1920s, when Reinhart acquired his core holdings. Key factors here were a purely aesthetic approach and an ahistorical view. The development of these phenomena in Europe and the USA formed the chief focus of the symposium. Titled 'Art without History', the symposium was scheduled to take place on 7 and 8 September 2012 in the museum's main gallery.
